How to keep grass healthy in San Francisco?
I have a bluegrass and ryegrass lawn. Recently, I bought Scott’s “High Traffic” mix (75% rye/25% blue) and planted some sod to replace a weedy section of my lawn. I planted the sod in a deep planter which I put in my yard until the sod was established. Once established, I dug up the weedy part of my lawn and laid down the sod. For a few weeks (March and April), the plant was deep green from the base of the crown to the tip of each blade. Over the past 2 weeks, the sheath of 30% to 40% of the blades has turned straw brown. It now looks “mostly green” with some imbedded straw color.
Some other parts of the established lawn have also showed this same behavior recently.
Why would this happen? How can I prevent this?
Is there a way to get rid of the straw colored sheaths? Raking the area seems to pull up a little green grass, and still leaves plenty of straw colored material stuck to the grass plants.
hi,, you have what sounds like a bugs in your grass.. This is typical for the situation you seem to be having.. The one I am talking about is called a chinch bug, You can get a product called ortho for the grass to kill these and other known pest.. If the area becomes to large you are going to have to tear up and replant your whole lawn again.. Here is the best product I have found. Well any Ortho or Round up product are the best.. But here is a link so you know what the bag looks like. You can get it at ..(sorry used past and cut on the stores to save time.)
